ピーター・マリックはブルース・ギタリストとして十代の頃から活躍し、ジョン・リー・フッカー、オーティス・スパンなどとも共演。73年にはロック・バンド、ジェイムズ・モンゴメリー・バンドに加入。2000年夏にニューヨークのクラブ、ザ・リヴィング・ルームに出演するデビュー前のノラ・ジョーンズを見て感銘を受ける。すぐに彼女に連絡を取りブルースのライヴ・ギグとこのレコーディングを行った。
